October 1, 2004 The Honorable Anna G. Eshoo205 Cannon House Office Building Washington, D.C. 20515-0514 Dear Congresswoman Eshoo: The purpose of this letter is to urge you to support the University of California Santa Cruz's efforts to establish a bio-info-nano research and development institute at NASA Ames Research Center.
The Bio-Info-Nano Research and Development Institute
(BIN-RDI) at NASA Ames will bring together researchers from the
University of California Santa Cruz (UCSC), NASA and industry to work on
cutting-edge research to further the fusion of the bio- infoand nano
sciences and support the education missions of UCSC, San Jose State
University and Foothill-De Anza College by contributing to the
development of a 21st Century workforce of scientists, engineers and
educators. Several companies currently located in Mountain View are involved in the fusion of bio- info- and nano technologies. The establishment of the BIN-RDI facility in close proximity to the City may help to further the research and development efforts of existing Mountain View companies and/or may attract additional companies to the City.
The BIN-RDI will
be the centerpiece of the Technology and Management Complex UCSC is
establishing at NASA Ames Research Center in its new NASA Research Park
(NRP). The NRP is one of the components of NASA's long-term development
plans for the 2,000 acres it controls at the Moffett Federal Complex.
The Mountain View City Council has conditionally supported NASA's
long-term development plans for the Moffett Complex. |
